Man denies vandalising heritage sites

A 61-year-old man has appeared in court charged with vandalising two of Canterbury's most important historic and religious sites.

Laurence Wales, of Bampton in Oxfordshire, is charged with damaging St Augustine's Abbey on September 13. The cost of the damage is unknown.

The following day he is accused of causing £800 damage to Canterbury Cathedral. Both are World Heritage Sites.

Mr Wales, currently living with his mother in Woolworth, south east London, denied both charges when he appeared before Canterbury magistrates.

His case was adjourned until November 20 and his conditional bail, which bans him from entering any Church of England or English Heritage property, was extended.
