Residents have been asked to be on the lookout after a monkey was spotted in Kent.

The primate was seen running into woodland near Waltham earlier today.

Thought to be a Capuchin, the furry fugitive was spotted making its way into Bavinge Wood.

"The Howlett's animal director confirmed it’s most likely a primate and possibly a Capuchin," said an eyewitness.

Capuchins are usually found in the rainforests of Central and South America.

While there are two nearby animal reserves – Port Lympne in Hythe and Howlett's in Canterbury – it is not thought to be escaped from either.

Charities are reportedly working alongside Aspinall to find the monkey, amid concerns that it could starve or suffer in the cold weather.

There have been several escapes from reserves over the years, including a Javan langur, called Malang, who fled her enclosure in Canterbury in 2016.

The Aspinall foundation, who run both Port Lympne and Howlett's, has been contacted for comment.
