Both the London and coastbound carriageways of the A299 between Herne Bay and St Nicholas were shut this morning following two separate accidents.
It happened shortly after 7am near the St Nicholas roundabout and traffic was diverted onto the A28 towards Canterbury.
It meant long queues and delays, especially for vehicles leaving Thanet, which were nose to tail and backed up for miles.
Police say there were two crashes, but the London-bound carriageway was the first to be cleared and opened.
The coastbound carriageway was still closed at 9am and a badly damaged car was seen sideways across the road and a Mini in a ditch nearby.
It is not yet known whether any of the drivers or occupants were injured.
