THE Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr George Carey, will officially bid goodbye to the city in the Cathedral on Sunday.

Dr Carey, who retires at the end of next month, will be giving his farewell sermon at the 11am service.

But it is not Dr Carey's last service in Canterbury. He will return to the Cathedral in the evening for the Diocesan service at 6.30pm. The Archbishop's last duty in the city is expected to take place on October 13 when a new Canon will be installed.

On Saturday Dr Carey will perform his last ordinations in the Cathedral together with the Bishop of Canterbury, the Rt Rev Stephen Venner, and the Bishop of Maidstone, the Rt Rev Graham Cray. Eleven ordinations are to take place.

Dr Carey's successor, Dr Rowan Williams, current Archbishop of Wales, will be enthroned in February.
