Members of the public battled in vain to save a man who collapsed on a busy thoroughfare in Canterbury.

The victim, in his 60s, was pronounced dead at the scene in St Dunstan's Street.

Emergency services sealed off the busy road in both directions as paramedics performed emergency CPR.

Firefighters were called to a blaze at a pub in St Dunstan's Street, Canterbury.

Crews were called shortly before 3pm on Wednesday to the scene, close to Roper House care home.

A spokesman for Secamb said: "Attempts were made to resuscitate the gentleman at the scene, but sadly they were unsuccessful.

"We understand CPR was also carried out on the patient prior to our arrival and we are thankful to everyone who helped."
