A drunken man arrested for pretending to have sex with a wall protested to police that he had only been kissing it.

Canterbury city magistrates heard homeless Derrick Wells, 42, was stopped by an officer in St George's Street in the city, hours after being released from a 68-day prison term for outraging public decency.

Wells admitted two counts of being drunk and disorderly.

Prosecutor Ruth Hawkins said: "The officer found a man simulating sexual intercourse against a wall. He was drunk and unsteady on his feet."

When asked to stop, he shouted and swore at the officer in full view of the public.

Ms Hawkins added: "On being arrested he said 'I’ve been nicked for kissing a wall'."

The following day he was arrested again at the Scrine Foundation shelter in Station Road East, where he was shouting and swearing again.

Natalie Brown, for Wells, said he had a range of physical disabilities and was being "picked on and called a cripple".

She said: "He has been wandering the streets and has not slept because he is too scared to.

"He accepts he was kissing and caressing the wall but was being goaded and cheered on by a crowd."

Magistrates ordered that Wells be kept in a court cell for the day.
