THE burning issue over a planned incinerator in Canterbury is expected to produce another heated debate on Thursday night.

A second public meeting about the controversial waste recycling scheme has been organised by the Kent County Council and is being held at the Westgate Hall at 7.30pm.

Among those attending will be Brett Waste Management which has lodged the planning application for a Solid Waste to Energy and Recycling Facility at its landfill site at Broad Oak.

Representatives of Brightstar, which is developing the SWERF technology in Australia, will also be present.

They claim their gasofication process, to turn refuse into usable energy, is the 21st century answer to slashing the tons of rubbish going into landfill sites.

Brett is expected to give a 10-minute presentation on the plan which has prompted widespread anxiety among environmentalists.

Anti-SWERF campaign groups like NOTOXITY and REACT are arguing fiercely that the technology is not proven and the plant would be in the wrong place.

They are expected to be among many people living in the Broad Oak area who will be at the meeting.
