Paul Babra from Kemsing Gardens in Canterbury wants action over derelict garage that damaged his car during storms

Calls are growing for someone to take responsibility for a derelict garage which was virtually destroyed in the ferocious storms.

Heavy winds lashed Kemsing Gardens in Canterbury in December, causing the side of the garage to collapse and damage chef Paul Babra’s car.

Debris and bricks rained down on his Ford Focus, denting the bonnet, smashing the left headlamp and causing up to £700 in damage.

Then, at the weekend, a piece of metal sheeting from the garage roof came loose.

It is now propped up precariously, and Mr Babra, 58, fears it could cause further damage to property or hurt someone if the wind picks up again.

But despite asking neighbours and contacting the council and the police, he is no closer to finding out who owns the garage.

The storm-damaged garages

He says: “The corrugated sheet is just hanging, but we don’t know who owns the garage. It hasn’t been used for many years. I’m worried it’s going to injure someone.

“These garages are in a very shabby condition. I’m surprised the council doesn’t want to build new garages there or even put in housing. I’m getting very frustrated with the situation.”

Council spokesman Rob Davies says that while the authority owns some garages across the district, Kemsing Gardens are not among them.
