Nine people have been hurt in a serious crash between a lorry and a minibus.

The vehicles collided on the A28 at Chartham shortly after 10am this morning.

Police, paramedics, fire crews and the air ambulance were called to the crash site, near the junction with Shalmsford Street.

Police closed the A28 off in both directions

The road - which links Canterbury and Ashford - was closed in both directions for more than two hours.

It re-opened at about 1pm.

Two people who were travelling in the minibus have been taken by land ambulance to the William Harvey Hospital at Ashford, while another seven people have suffered minor injuries.

Police say both vehicles were travelling towards Ashford at the time of the crash, which happened as the minibus turned into a farm.

David Sharma, 49, owns the Howfield Manor Hotel along the A28.

He said: "At about 10.30am a load of ambulances and fire engines came past.

"I've heard a lot more since then. It sounds pretty serious."
