Steel firm to axe 50 jobs

THE boss of Parker Steel at Canterbury has blamed a slump in business for a decision to make nearly 50 people redundant at his firm.

Managing director Guy Parker says a downturn in the construction industry, particularly in London, has forced the job losses.

He explained: "There is also a lot of uncertainty in the economy aggravated by the prospect of war with Iraq and that has filtered down to our business."
