A teenage Deliveroo driver was sprayed in the face during a gang attack in Canterbury's High Street.

The 19-year-old was approached by three men on push bikes near the junction with Stour Street after picking up a delivery from a nearby restaurant.

Following an argument, one of the attackers pulled out a small canister and sprayed an unknown substance in the victim's face.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Chris Bungard said: "The victim, a 19-year-old man from the Canterbury area, had just picked up a delivery from a nearby restaurant when he was approached by three men with pushbikes.

"A verbal altercation took place, and one of the men took out a small canister and tried to spray the victim’s face with an unknown substance.

"Fortunately the victim was able to lower the visor of his motorcycle helmet to deflect most of the spray. He went to hospital as a precaution."

One of the attackers was white, aged about 22, and was wearing a black Nike zipped hooded top, black gloves, black Nike trousers and a beanie hat with a Stone Island logo.

The second man was white, aged about 28, and was wearing a black hooded top, a grey beanie hat, a black gilet, jeans, black Nike trainers and was carrying a ‘man bag’.

The third man was also white and aged about 28. He was wearing a silver or grey beanie hat, a blue jumper, grey gloves and dark grey tracksuit bottoms.

A Deliveroo spokesman said: "Riders should be able to make deliveries without the fear of violence or intimidation from anyone.

"This attack is unprovoked, unacceptable and we are determined to do all we can to keep our riders safe.

"We have upgraded our app so riders can report if they feel unsafe and take any incident with the utmost seriousness."

Anyone who witnessed the assault at 9pm on Monday, March 5, or recognises the descriptions of the three men should call police on 01843 222289 or Kent Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111, quoting reference number ZY/11545/18.
