A former Canterbury High School pupil is fighting for his life in a London hospital after being hit by a car on Monday.

Will Roberts, 17, of Querns Road, Canterbury, was airlifted to the Royal London Hospital after the accident at 5.17pm in London Road, Dover.

He was with his girlfriend, Danielle Watson, 16, at the time.

Will's mother Michelle is at his bedside.

She said: “It has been a nightmare.

“From what we have been told they were crossing the road and he pushed his girlfriend out of the way.

“Will is generous to a fault , so lovely and so caring."

Will’s sister Natalie, also of Querns Road, described him as a “fighter” but said his condition remained critical after an operation on Tuesday evening.

Will had been crossing the road with Danielle when they were both hit by a Vauxhall Zafira.

Danielle, from Dover, suffered minor injuries.

Kent Air Ambulance helicopter landed in the playground of Barton Junior School before flying Will to the Royal London Hospital.

Kent Air Ambulance spokesman Nicci Chrisp said he had suffered "severe head injuries."

She added: “The doctor who accompanied him on the hour long air and road journey said the patient was stable for the transportation."

Police closed the road for three hours for investigators.

The car driver is a 44-year-old man from Dover. His vehicle has been confiscated by police.

The Kent Police serious crash investigation unit is appealing for witnesses. A police spokesman said the incident was not being treated as a hit and run.
