As many as 1,000 people are expected to join a march against Britain First today.

A peaceful protest has been called after the far-right group held its own demonstration outside Canterbury mosque at the weekend.

Organisers say the aim of this afternoon's march is to show solidarity with the Muslim community.

University of Kent politics student Nic Weatherill said: "We have decided to organise a peaceful demonstration to show our support for the Muslim community, many of whom who are friends, lecturers and family."

On Sunday, an open day at Canterbury Mosque was attended by almost 300 visitors, but marred by a small group of banner-waving demonstrators from Britain First.

Mr Weatherill said: "We are going to stand together in a united front against Islamophobia, and the demonisation of what is largely a peaceful community, in a march on our university campus.

"Freedom of speech is an integral part of our democracy, as well as our university environment, and while Britain First have a right to express their views, we also have the right to oppose their views in public as a community - and it’s about time we did."

The march will be held today at 2pm, with protestors gathering outside the mosque in Giles Lane on the University of Kent campus in Canterbury.
