A video gaming centre, Asian supermarket and food hall are the latest businesses set to move into a city’s £115 million leisure and student development.

The traders hope to build on Canterbury’s Riverside complex’s commercial success, which includes 189 new homes, 493 student bedrooms, eight cafés, bars and restaurants, a five-screen cinema and a public square for events.

Site managers have now just announced the new businesses signing leases are Riverside Social, which will offer a stylish food hall, Asian supermarket chain, Starry Mart, offering “ready-to-eat hot food to go” and a competitive video gaming venue for enthusiasts, called Side Quest.

Bosses say it will make the waterside development – formerly the city council depot – one of the city’s “go-to social and leisure hot-spots”.

It means 10 of 12 available units at The Riverside have now been let with openings scheduled this month.

They include the already revealed Boom Battle Bar – a “competitive” social venue with activities including axe throwing, shuffleboard and augmented reality darts as well as beer/prosecco pong, crazier golf and karaoke.

Bosses say the bar will open on September 22 and centre managers believe it will drive footfall, and appeal to families, students and working professionals, offering new “day-to-night entertainment”.

Previously announced and also now being prepared for opening in early September is the Pan Asian fine dining restaurant Sekkoya, which also runs Citi Terrace in the city centre.

Already open and trading are Korean Cowgirl, Heavenly Desserts and Fireaway Pizza.

It leaves just two units at the centre to fill, including the one previously earmarked for BrewDog who pulled out.

But centre bosses are confident that latest new arrivals will spark interest from other businesses.

Emma Mackenzie, head of set management at NewRiver, asset managers for Riverside on behalf of Canterbury City Council said she was delighted by the range and offer of the latest tenants.

“Boom Battle Bar is a fantastic and unique offer for Canterbury, and will create new footfall, jobs and an exciting day to night offer for local people together with the other existing and new operators. Riverside is now more than two thirds let and there is significant interest in the two remaining units.”
