Road closed after lorry hits railway bridge in Chartham Harch near Canterbury

A road near Canterbury has been shut in both directions after a lorry hit a railway bridge.

Police were called to Howfield Lane in Chartham Hatch shortly before 1pm after reports the artic truck had struck the overpass.

Lorry blocks the road after accident

The crash sparked congestion chaos and police reported long queues of traffic as the wreckage blocked the road.

Howfield Lane has been shut in both directions and officers are still at the scene.

Specialist engineers were expected to attempt to remove the lorry soon after 3pm.

British Transport Police officers have inspected the bridge for damage, which is believed to be minimal.
