A secondary school is warning pupils to "always be in a group" when off-site following a report of strangers approaching a youngster.

Barton Court Grammar School, in Canterbury, has sent an email to parents asking them to relay essential safety information to their children.

An incident in Canterbury city centre yesterday has sparked the school to issue the tips.

An email signed off by the deputy head teacher reads: "We have had a report of one of our students being approached by a group of strangers in town yesterday after school.

"Please could you have a conversation with your child regarding personal safety in public and ensure they know how to keep themselves safe: always being in a group, avoiding areas that are not populated and not lit, and looking out for each other."
