Window cleaner Paul Wood from Whitstable is the UK’s strongest
man.

The 38-year-old beat off 11 rivals in the under 105kg category
final at Whitstable Rugby Club on Sunday.

Events included lifting atlas stones, the farmer’s walk, the
tyre flip, car deadlift and pulling a jeep.

Mr Wood, of Cornwallis Circle, said: “I was very pleased with my
performance and I was happy to have done it in front of my home
crowd. There were a lot of friends and family there and people I
know from the town so it was a bit nerve-racking.”

He won four out of seven events, came second in two and third in
one.

“I didn’t really have a bad event,” he added. “And I’d like to
thank all my friends, family and supporters for helping me.”

He now qualifies for the world’s strongest man competition in
the 105kg category.

But his first event will be the British strongest man
competition, a tournament separate to the UK competition.

Organiser Andy Dilnot said he was pleased with the turn out and
the level competition.

“Standards were very high and we feel we ran a very well
organised event,” he said.

“It was very well received by the crowd, who were fantastic in
getting behind the competitors.”

The day also saw a karate demonstration, a barbecue and a
licensed bar.
