A woman suffered a broken thigh in a city centre car crash this morning.

Traffic was brought to a standstill in Canterbury after the accident in St George’s Place at 10am.

The injured woman – a passenger in a Peugeot 206 hit by a Mercedes – had to be cut free by firefighters.

She was rushed to the William Harvey hospital in Ashford with a fractured femur.

Off-duty fireman Joe Symons was passing by at the time of the crash.

He was said to have given the woman first aid and stabilised her spine before fire crews arrived.

They used hydraulic equipment to cut the door and the roof from the wreckage before the woman was treated by paramedics.

St George’s Place and Upper Chantry Lane were shut until the road was cleared.

The drivers of both cars were unhurt.
