A pensioner died from Covid-19 in hospital after originally being admitted for a different illness, an inquest opening has heard.

Gweneth Bowyer, who lived in Hassall Reach in Canterbury, had complained of abdominal pain and went to QEQM hospital in Margate.

She was later diagnosed with acute appendicitis - which is a painful swelling of the appendix.

But tragically the 89-year-old contracted Covid-19 while at the hospital and she died on July 13.

Coroner Katrina Hepburn told the opening of the inquest at County Hall, Maidstone, today how a post-mortem gave the cause of death as bronchopneumonia due to Covid-19.

An appendectomy - where the appendix is removed - was listed as a contributing factor.

A provisional date for the full inquest has been set for August 3 at Archbishop's Palace in Maidstone at 10.30am.
