Couple attacked on Canterbury railway bridge between Oxford Road and Lansdown Road

A young couple suffered serious head injuries when they were mugged in the early hours.

The man and woman in their 20s were walking over a railway footpath in Canterbury at about 1.50am on Bank Holiday Friday when they were assaulted by two men.

The attackers approached them from behind as they walked over the footbridge between Oxford Road, and the Lansdown Road footpath, near to Canterbury East railway station.

The men assaulted the couple, and stole the woman's mobile phone.

The two suspects - one of whom was wearing a red puffer-style jacket and the other a black puffer-style jacket - then left the scene in the direction of Station Road East.

Police officers were called to the the scene and searched the area, but no one matching a description of the suspects was found.

Both victims were taken to a local hospital, where it is understood wounds on their heads were glued due to injuries sustained in the assault.

Police are now appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

A spokesman said: "Enquiries into the incident are ongoing and anyone who witnessed what happened or has information, dashcam or CCTV footage that may assist is urged to call Kent Police on 01843 222289, quoting reference 46/106337/22."
