THERE could be a summer rugby revolution on the way as the first Touch Rugby tournament takes place in Canterbury.

Ten teams, drawn from local companies, schools and hospitals, will launch this unique form of the game which has made a huge impact internationally at Merton Lane on Sunday.

Touch rugby, which involves minimal contact, can be played by men and women of all ages and skill levels and many of Sunday’s mixed teams will be making their first acquaintance with a rugby ball.

Canterbury press officer David Haigh said: "All you need is a group of friends, a space and a rugby ball. Anyone can play. It has proved so popular after taking off in the Southern Hemisphere that there are now leagues in countries throughout the world."

If Sunday’s tournament, which starts at 11am, proves a success, Canterbury aim to start a Touch Rugby league in June.

Team are made up of six players and squads of up to 14 are allowed. All the teams are guaranteed three or four games and there are bars and a barbecue.

There is still room for more teams. The fee is £20 per team and the lower age limit for players is 16.

Tournament Organiser Will Matthewman can be contacted on 07769 551271 or by e-mail at: wmatthewman@hotmail.com.
