Boxers warm up for charity show

BOXERS from Canterbury ABC warmed up for next week's Round Table charity dinner show in the city by fighting at Corby, Northamptonshire.

Joe Cooper won every round for a unanimous points win over Steve Hoyte, of Belgrave, Leicester, but Lee Tugwell’s aggressive style just failed to earn the majority against Keith Grewal, also of Belgrave.

Newcomer Aaron Lowry had his debut against the promoting club’s Lennie Gibson but a disturbance in the crowd before his bout took his concentration and, annoyed by his opponent’s use of his head, he dropped a majority decision.

Joe Gough, however, delighted cornermen Kevin Place and Martin McElvie by winning the trophy for best boxer of the night after he outpointed James Gorman, of Hinckley Olympic, who had a first-class record.

National finalist Ritchie Goodfellow used skill and speed to take a majority decision against Robert Finch, of Wisbech.

All of these will be in action at Rutherford College, University of Kent, on Friday, April 11, when eight junior and eight senior bouts will make up the bill for the Round Table show.

Tickets are selling well, but some still remain at £27.50, including dinner. The evening will include an auction of boxing collectors’ items.

For details telephone Dave Kenward, 01843 821970.
