Canterbury ladies look to have blown their title hopes after losing 2-1 at Surbiton on the final day of the regular season.

Second-placed Leicester had their game against Slough called off because of snow, but they are overwhelming favourites to win the rearranged game and guarantee a place in Europe next season.

Canterbury, who would have to win the play-offs to join them if Leicester do clinch the championship, were 2-0 down inside 10 minutes on Saturday.

Vicky Bryant and Hannah Coulson put the hosts in charge and although Eliza Brett pulled a goal back after half time, it wasn’t enough to salvage a result.

Canterbury’s Mel Clewlow said: “It looked like a few people were scared on the pitch. We didn’t really string two passes together.

“When it’s the biggest game you’ve ever played in, you don’t want to be the one person who makes a mistake which costs the team.

“It wasn’t a very nice feeling after the game. We sat in the changing-room for about an hour, not really saying anything to each other. I just wanted to come home and when I woke up on Sunday, I was still gutted.”
