MEDWAY & Maidstone AC's Michael Coleman dipped under 50 minutes to defeat a field of over 1,000 in the Barretts Canterbury 10-mile race.

Coleman was quickly into his running and eventually won by just over three minutes from Christian Nicolson of Team Solent.

Kent cross-country champion Barry Royden (Medway & Maidstone) just gained the verdict for third place as he finished in the same time as the promising newcomer Toby Lambert (Alton Joggers).

A personal best and the title of Kent champion was the reward for 19-year-old Neil Renault of Medway and Maidstone who was the first county qualified athlete to finish who had also managed to enter the race before the official cut off date.

Renault has grown in stature since his transfer from Deal Triathletes under the guidance of Coleman's coach, Jim McNeill, but this is his first senior title.

Results: 1 Michael Coleman (Medway & Maidstone) 49.59, 3 Barry Royden (Medway & Maidstone) 53.40, 5 Neil Renault (Medway & Maidstone) 54.03. 14 Lee McMeekin (Medway & Maidstone) 56.21.
