Kent's Sam Billings overcame an injury scare but was unable to help England avoid defeat against India in the first ODI at Pune on Tuesday.

The Kent captain was fielding on the boundary during India's innings when he fell awkwardly on his shoulder.

But after receiving treatment, Billings returned to the game when England batted, showing no ill-effects of the injury as he scored 18 from 22 balls.

England were cruising to victory at 135 without loss in the 15th over but then lost wickets at regular intervals, dismissed for 251 in reply to India's 317-5.

Billings was caught at cover driving by Virat Kohli off the bowling of debutant Prasidh Krishna, ending a partnership of 41 in less than eight overs with Moeen Ali.

A statement from the ECB released during the game said: "Sam Billings sprained his collar bone joint but this is not related to his previous shoulder injury.

"He’s receiving treatment and we are hopeful he will be able to bat later."

Billings, who is due to miss the first two months of Kent's season while he plays in the IPL, was sidelined during 2019 after dislocating his shoulder fielding for Kent. It was an injury that saw him miss England's 2019 World Cup win.

The 29-year-old, who did not play in the IT20 Series with India, was playing for the first time since he featured in the BBL at the end of January.

Billings impressed for England in the 50-over format last summer when he scored his maiden century against Australia at Old Trafford in September.
