Sam Billings says Kent have been given selection headaches after players have come into the side and performed.

Kent won their fifth Specsavers County Championship match of the season with a 342 run victory against Middlesex at The Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence.

Grant Stewart returned to the side after injury, with players rested for the One-Day Cup final on Saturday, and scored a century and took eight wickets in the match.

Skipper Billings said: “We’ve had guys who have come in this week and grabbed their opportunity and given us selection headaches that we haven’t had in years gone by.

“Grant coming in and doing that in his fifth game of first-class cricket was outstanding and a credit to the environment the backroom staff has created as it has allowed people to come in the side and express themselves.

“It’s really pleasing from my point of view and from a team point of view it’s a fantastic place to be around at the moment.”

Harry Podmore took a career-best of 6-32 in Middlesex’s second innings as Kent won by 342 runs.

Kent’s bowlers dominated the match restricting their opponents to 180 runs in the match.

Billings said: “The mentality and attitude towards the match was the most pleasing thing - the four seamers especially without Darren Stevens and Matt Henry. I know Calum Haggett and Ivan Thomas didn’t get the wickets the other two got but it was a proper four bowler seam attack that was relentless.

"It showed Middlesex how to bowl on that wicket and there was no doubt we outbowled them.

“I said to the lads before the first day how excited I was to come back into the side. In this format of the game especially because of the way in which the wins have come.

“It’s been fantastic to see the attitude and the way we’ve gone about our cricket so I was really excited.”
