Kent have strengthened their squad with the signing of South African Wiaan Mulder for seven Specsavers County Championship games subject to regulatory approval.

The test bowling all-rounder is due to begin his spell against Surrey at Beckenham on May 20, replacing Australian Matt Renshaw as the club's overseas representative.

Mulder boasts 66 first-class wickets in 22 matches along with an average of 22.93 and a best of 7/25 for the Lions against the Dolphins back in 2016.

The 21-year-old said: "I have always wanted to play county cricket and I am stoked to be joining a top division side such as Kent.

"I’m fully focused on proving my abilities at this high level and hope to contribute to success at this historic club."

Mulder claimed a wicket for just 32 runs in eight overs when he made his South Africa ODI debut at the age of 18 against Bangladesh in October 2017.

He is also expected to boost the team's batting ranks and offers a first-class average of 39.50 having registered a high score of 146 in Bloemfontein in January this year.

Kent director of cricket Paul Downton said: "With Sam Billings and Joe Denly unavailable for differing reasons, Wiaan’s ability to bowl a heavy ball and bat in the top six will be a huge asset to the side as we look to establish ourselves in Division 1 following our exciting win at Edgbaston earlier this season."

The personal highlight of Renshaw's stint in Canterbury thus far is his knock of 109 in April's seven wicket defeat to Sussex, with the 23-year-old having also taken his first List A wicket in Thursday's victory over Surrey.

His final appearance is set to be in next week's county championship clash with Yorkshire, following which Mulder will take over until he completes his stay in the fixture away to Hampshire commencing on July 13.
