Barry Hawkins’ World Snooker Championship hopes are over for another year after being edged out in a final frame thriller against Mark Allen.

The Dartford player, who was playing in the last 16 of the tournament for the first time, suffered an agonising 13-12 after previously holding a 7-3 lead.

However, Allen won six frames on the bounce to take a 9-7 lead in the second session.

Allen and Hawkins battled hard and the game entered a final frame decider, where the Ulsterman held his nerve to claim a quarter-final place.

Hawkins told World Snooker: “I struggled with the break-off all day and that's what cost me. I was disappointed not to even get a chance in the last. But I lost it in the second session because I should have gone 8-3 up.”
