DARTFORD residents will get a discount at the crossing, but their neighbours in Swanley will be missing out, it has been confirmed.

Transport Minister Rosie Winterton has published a written statement outlining the government's intention to set up a local discount scheme for use at the Dartford Crossing.

Eligible residents living in Dartford will be asked to pay a fee of £10 each year upfront for an electronic tag that will give them 50 crossings a year - working out at 20p a crossing.

MP for the borough Dr Howard Stoate said he welcomed the Government's decision, which will benefit residents in Dartford.

Dr Stoate said: "It will provide a major saving for local residents who use the crossing and will go some way to making up for the congestion and pollution generated by the crossing we have to put up with on a daily basis."

But Dartford council leader Cllr Jeremy Kite, disagrees.

He said: "Dr Stoate must be the only person who thinks this is a good deal for Dartford. Can anyone living along side the M25 support a discount over their family's health?"

The announcement has also angered politicians representing residents in neighbouring areas such as Swanley and Gravesham who will not be entitled to any reduction.

Michael Fallon, MP for Sevenoaks, said: "It is unfair and illogical."
