Motorists were left in long queues during the rush hour after a giant tarpaulin fell onto the motorway.

One lane on the clockwise section was closed near junction 1B to the A296 Princes Road.

Drivers said there was stop-start traffic with congestion back beyond junction 30 for Lakeside.

A police spokesman said: "There are reports that a large piece of tarpaulin has come adrift from a vehicle and led to debris on the carriageway.

"Police have attended and temporary lane closures are in place until it is cleared by Highways crews."

The road has been cleared.
