Firefighters were called to tackle an oven fire last Tuesday evening after a woman cooking lamb chops inadvertently switched the grill on with the door closed.

Crews arrived at the woman’s home in Joyce Green Lane, Dartford at just before 8pm and put the blaze out using a fire blanket before clearing smoke from the property.

They were keen to praise the cook for her quick thinking as she immediately left the building and dialled 999 upon discovering the fire.

Two fire engines arrived and were at the scene for about 15 minutes.

If you find yourself using a grill at home, it’s always recommended that you leave the oven door ajar, unless stated differently in your manufacturer’s manual.

Some ovens have a built-in cooling fan, which allows you to have the door closed. If your oven doesn’t have a cooling fan, smoke can start building up inside the oven which could cause a fire.
