Motorists have been warned that the M25 could be closed overnight while emergency repairs to the road are carried out.

The clockwise carriageway has two lanes closed at J2 for the A2 after fuel was spilled over the road surface following a lorry crash on Tuesday, November 29.

On Twitter motorists are reported the "nightmare" delays, with Matt Webb posting that it has taken him four hours to get from Hatfield to his home in Maidstone.

Highways England is advising drivers to consider alternative routes and allow extra time for their journeys.

They have also warned that the motorway heading clockwise will have to be fully closed from 8pm while workmen carry out emergency repairs.

Officers say the repairs will be carried out and completed overnight.

Police were on the scene and had stopped traffic, and delays are stretching back to the Dartford Tunnel.

A Highways England spokesman said: "A road traffic collision resulted in the rupture of a fuel tank leaving a large amount of diesel on the carriageway which requires resurfacing.

"It is expected that the closed lanes will only reopen after the peak traffic period this evening.

"Congestion is affecting journeys southbound at the Dartford Crossing.

"Highways England is working hard to reopen the road as soon as safely possible and is advising drivers to consider alternative routes or to allow extra time for their journey."
