St George's Day Parade in Dartford tomorrow

Knights, jesters, and dragons will once again line the streets of Dartford when the town hosts its annual St George’s Day parade.

The festivities are taking place tomorrow (Friday) as it is the closest school day to St George’s Day itself, which this year falls on Sunday.

Last year's parade was attended by hundreds

Children from 10 local schools will take part in the celebrations, which get under way at 12.45pm with brass bands and morris dancers providing entertainment in One Bell Corner and the High Street.

The youngsters will get involved from 1.35pm, when the parade sets off from the Civic Centre in Home Gardens.

It will then head to Central Park via the Orchards Shopping Centre, Market Street, and the War Memorial. It all leads up to a climactic performance at the Bandstand, where crowds can expect to see the premier Indian wedding band, the Bollywood Brass Band, and the West Hill Morris Dance Troupe.

Kent Equality Cohesion Council (KECC) is organising events in both Dartford and Gravesend again this year, and chief executive Gurvinder Sandher, who has been involved since 2008, is looking forward to the day.

“We are really pleased to be again in a position to organise the St George’s Day celebrations,” he said.

“I believe passionately that events like St George’s Day are a great way of bringing diverse communities together and celebrating our core values which make England the country it is.

“I am very grateful to all our partners for their support.”

The Mayor of Dartford, Cllr John Burrell, and council leader Cllr Jeremy Kite are both expected to attend.

KECC is supported in its organisation by Cohesion Plus, Gravesham council, Dartford council, and Arts Council England.
