A planning bid to transform a huge plot of land into a new training ground for Millwall FC could be expected soon.

The Championship outfit wants to build new facilities which would be "amongst the best in the country" in Fawkham Road, West Kingsdown, near Dartford.

Several meetings have been held with neighbours and local residents who were invited via letter to discuss the proposals.

If approved, it would see The Lions, who currently train at Calmont Road in Bromley, move just over 15 miles away to Kent in order to host weekly sessions.

The club doesn't own its existing facility and the lease is set to expire soon, prompting its search.

Speaking to fans in October, Chief executive Steve Kavanagh confirmed the purchase of a "significant area of land" in West Kingsdown.

In a further update this week, the club boss said the process is now "progressing as well as we could have hoped" and the club hopes to submit a planning application for the site in the Spring.

Millwall FC's home ground is 19 miles away in south London

He told supporters: "We have since hosted another engagement meeting with local residents and also appointed expert advisors in other key areas, including planning and highways.

Mr Kavanagh added: "Crucially, the Community Trust has already commenced work within the areas local to the site.

"A dedicated officer is in the process of being appointed to oversee the different projects and initiatives that will be implemented, and we’re pleased that such efforts have already started in a handful of schools.

"We’re looking to expand this alongside engaging local football clubs as well as Brands Hatch and London Golf Club, who are situated nearby, and of course the wider community."

If the training ground is built, it would be an easy journey from the Lion's main base and stadium at The Den in Bermondsey.

It is 19 miles away, almost entirely along the A20 and, according to the online AA Route Planner, would take just 44 minutes to drive.
