While there has been no specific threat to Bluewater, a police spokesman confirmed extra officers were being drafted in, dressed in riot gear.

In a statement released today (Tuesday), a spokeswoman for the shopping and leisure destination in Greenhithe said: "Bluewater remains open for business as usual.

"The safety and security of our guests and hosts remains our priority and we will continue to work alongside Kent police and act on their advice.

"Due to recent events, Bluewater can confirm an increased police presence has been put in place on site."

The Broadway in Bexleyheath is also on alert. A spokeswoman said: "We are monitoring the situation with the police and following their advice. We will evacuate the centre if necessary.

"We are preparing for the eventuality [that rioters will come]. We will keep everyone in the centre informed.

The Priory Centre in Dartford confirmed at this stage there are no special arrangements.

A spokeswoman for Dartford council said: "Currently there is no indication that Dartford will be affected by the public disorder as seen in some parts of the country. The council’s emergency planners, along with partners including Kent Police, Kent County Council and other external agencies have long established emergency plans to provide support to communities if issues arise."

Three matches involving local sides have been cancelled on police advice. Carling Cup matches at Charlton, Crystal Palace and West Ham were postponed this morning.
