Dartford Science and Technology College

A school in Dartford is planning to ditch Kent County Council control and be taken over by a group best known for its supermarkets.

The governors and principal of Dartford Science and Technology College on Heath Lane have decided to consult on whether the school should become a foundation co-operative trust, which is part of the Co-op movement.

The college would become independent from KCC and gain the same freedoms as schools with academy status.

Last year, Northfleet School for Girls became a co-operative trust.

The school is currently in discussion with a number of “high profile” partners who will contribute expertise as trustees.

A spokesman said the Co-op had “a positive set of values that include self responsibility, equality, solidarity, equity and democracy.

“By becoming a co-operative trust school, DSTC will be linked into a network of schools who will share best practice in order to raise standards. Our students will have the opportunity to broaden their horizons and visit other co-operative schools across the globe.”
