A banned driver sped through Dartford at twice the speed limit - hurtling past a mum and two children who were about to use a zebra crossing.

Norman Samura was filling up his Mercedes at a petrol station in London Road when he was surrounded by two police cars.

Maidstone Crown Court heard how the 23-year-old raced through the forecourt and into traffic at 60mph - pursued by the officers.

A video of the incident on January 19 this year was played to the court showing a woman getting out of the Mercedes as Samura uses the petrol pump and enters the shop.

But before she returns, Samura races away, leaving her stranded.

Prosecutor Mary Jacobson told how the Merc went over a Zebra crossing as a woman and two children were waiting to cross.

Samura then drove the wrong side of the road along St Vincents Avenue and ignored other motorists at a roundabout before fleeing the vehicle. He was found hiding in Lansbury Crescent.

Samura, from Spindle Close, Woolwich, admitted charges of dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and without insurance. He had only been banned for similar offences in September last year.

He was jailed for 21 weeks which he will serve consecutively to a sentence he is currently serving and has been banned from driving for eight months

The judge, Recorder Simon Denison QC told him: "You were driving a Mercedes that you were not entitled to drive when you were seen on a forecourt at a petrol station in Dartford and police suspected you of drug dealing.

"You chose to speed away and proceeded to have near misses with other vehicles. You were eventually pulled over by the police and got out of the vehicle and ran.

"The vehicle was found to have a small quantity of cannabis."

Samura also admitted to possessing the drug.
