Financial considerations dictate Charlton dare not take the Carling Cup lightly, manager Alan Pardew insists.

Speaking ahead of tonight's first round tie at home to League 1 club Yeovil, he stressed: "The finance that comes from a good cup run will help so we're taking it very seriously.

"It's a competition that Championship sides have not done well in but we hope to have a good run."

Newcomer Hameur Bouazza, signed on a season-long loan from Fulham, is likely to start tonight after making his Charlton debut as an 83rd-minute substitute in Saturday's 2-0 home win against Swansea. Fellow midfielder Matt Holland, who became highly influential following his arrival as a 56th-minute substitute, also looks certain to start.

"I will be making changes but I don't want to make too many," said Pardew who may be forced to rest new skipper Mark Hudson who is struggling with an ankle injury that threatened to keep him out of Saturday's side.

"I dare not take any risks with our centre-backs because we've only got two," he added.

Charlton's hopes of bringing Sam Sodje back to The Valley after playing for the club on loan from Reading last season have been hit as the player is recovering from a knee injury.

But Pardew emphasised: "If Jonathan Fortune plays consistently as well as he did against Swansea then he will stay in the side."
