Charlton supporters turned on the players with a barrage of abuse as the club's depressing sequence without a win stretched to 12 games against Coventry on Tuesday night.

As the players left the field at the final whistle they were subjected to chants of "What a load of rubbish," and "You're not fit to wear the shirt," on another troubled night at The Valley.

Just four points have been taken from a possible 36 as the club hurtle towards League 1.

Caretaker manager Phil Parkinson's prospects of a permanent appointment virtually dissolved as the players produced another inept performance.

Parkinson met immediately afterwards with Charlton plc vice-chairman Bob Whitehand and football club chairman Richard Murray.

He declined to disclose the nature of the talks while Mr Murray said there would be no annoucements from the club regarding the managerial situation in the next few days.

"All I will say is that the board have been incredibly supportive," said Parkinson.

"If we're going to fail as a team then I want to fail having a real go. And that wasn't the case tonight.

"We looked a nervy side. Now we have to make sure we play with a lot more passion.for "

Charlton fell behind in the 40th minute to Robbie Simpson's far post volley.

When Daniel Fox tripped Izale McLeod for a 48th minute penalty, on-loan Deon Burton equalised with his first goal for the club.

Fox was quick to make amends in the 50th minute with a 35-yard free-kick that caught Charlton goalkeeper Nicky Weaver napping.

Charlton: Weaver; Cranie, Hudson, Fortune, McEveley (Semedo 14 mins); Gillespie (Gray 67 mins), Holland, Bailey, Bouazza; Burton (Todorov 67 mins), McLeod. Substitutes not used: Sam, Elliot.

Attendance: 20,427.
