Ben Quilter was just one win away from a judo bronze medal at the Beijing Paralympics.

The 26-year-old, who is a member at Dartford Judo Club, was stopped in the Men’s -60kg Bronze Medal Contest by Azerbaijan’s Ramin Ibrahimov on Sunday.

An ippon score for Ibrahimov, equivalent to a knock-out, decided the contest after just 27 seconds inside the Workers’ Gymnasium.

Visually impaired Quilter, who hails from Brighton but trained for the Games in Dartford, is a first Dan black belt.

He was competing in the Repechage event after losing a closely fought preliminary round match to China’s Xiaodong Li.

That meant he was unable to contest for a gold or silver but knew three wins would still see him head home with a medal.

Quilter fought back with wins over Brazilian Helder Araujo, with his own ippon score, and Cuba’s Sergio Perez but lost the chance of bronze in his final match.
