A police cordon in Dartford's Spital Street after a man's body was found

A post mortem is being carried out to determine the cause of death of a man found in a car park.

The man, who has not been named, was found dead just off Spital Street yesterday morning. Police were called to the Gala Bingo car park at 10.30am.

The man’s death is being treated as unexplained by police, who await results from the autopsy.

The area was cordoned off for over three hours while investigations were carried out and passers by spotted forensics officers carrying evidence bags.

An alleyway leading from the bingo hall car park to Sainsbury’s was also closed and more police officers and a car were present around the supermarket.

Spital Street, which leads onto the town’s High Street, was packed with shoppers and workers yesterday morning, who were diverted away from the area.

The police cordon included a gated alley beside Sainsbury's in Dartford

Michael Curtis, operations manager for the bingo club said yesterday: “We’ve had to close today because of this. It’s terrible for our business.

“The man was found in our car park but we can’t open because our fire exits lead out into the car park and nobody is allowed out through those doors. We can’t open without the correct safety measures in place.

“They police haven’t been able to tell us how long they will be.”

Next door to the car park is the Flying Boat Wetherspoon’s pub and staff member Ben said: “Everybody seems to have heard that a body’s been found, but nobody seems to know who it was or what happened.

"The police can’t tell me anything, but staff here park their cars in a bay alongside the car park and that’s been cordoned off too, so we can’t get in or out.”

Police left the scene at 1.51pm.
