A toddler from Sandwich narrowly avoided crunching into a snail from a bag of frozen broccoli and cauliflower florets from the Deal Iceland store.

Two-year-old Daisy Simpson was served up the snail with a cheese sauce after it had been frozen and sold with the blanched veg by the supermarket chain.

Despite being frozen, boiled and baked, you could still see its eyes, two days after it was discovered on Daisy’s plate.

Her mother, Jessica Lawson, said: “She shouted out ‘Snail, snail.’”

Miss Lawson, of Laburnum Avenue, Sandwich, said: “I bought it at 3.30pm on the Saturday and cooked it that night.”

She took it from the bag, boiled it, mixed it with a cheesy sauce and baked it in the oven before serving it up.

“I had seen it but I thought it was just a piece of dark broccoli,” she said.

But when Miss Lawson took the packaging and receipt to the Queen Street store in Deal to complain, she was offered a £20 voucher but no apology.

Despite the goodwill gesture, Miss Lawson said: “I won’t be shopping in there again. I’m not happy about it. They are supposed to sell food that is checked.

“I’m just lucky that my two-year-old daughter didn’t put it into her mouth and she knows what a snail is.”

Ninka Davies, Iceland PR manager, said: “We take all complaints very seriously.

“We have strict product controls in place and it’s very rare that something should slip through the net.

“The product development manager and the supplier concerned have been contacted regarding this and our quality control department will keep a close eye on this product.”
