A police sergeant and a member of staff from Dover police station have been praised for the way they helped save the life of a man in the town centre earlier this year.

Sgt Simon Drew and employee Dawn White have been presented with Chief Constable's Certificates of Merit today for their dedication and professionalism.

The incident happened on January 7 when someone went into Dover police station and said there was an unconscious man outside Dover Town Council offices.

Officers attended and found the man had a weak, unsteady pulse and that he was still unconscious and unresponsive.

Dawn ran back to the police station to fetch a heart-start machine, and Sgt Drew returned with her. Under direction from another officer, Sgt Drew started CPR as the man had stopped breathing and his heart had stopped.

Dawn spoke to people nearby to get the man's full medical history. Due to both the CPR and the administration of a drug overdose antidote, the man regained consciousness.

It is thought that without their quick thinking, teamwork and perseverance with CPR, it is unlikely the man would have survived.
