Unexploded ordnance, thought to be from Second World War, found on Walmer Beach

A beach area was sealed off after an unexploded wartime "weapon" was found.

Police and coastguards were alerted to the incident at Walmer Beach after 10.30am today.

A Kent Police spokesman said: “We were called to a report of an unexploded ordnance on Walmer Beach.

Officers attended and put a cordon in place as a precaution.

"The ordnance was found to be a round of ammunition, probably dating from the Second World War, and it was taken away to be disposed of safely.”

A UK Coastguard spokesman said: “We received a report from a member of the public that there was ordnance on Walmer Beach, Kent.

“Deal Coastguard Rescue Team and Kent Police were sent to the scene.

"The ordnance has been disposed of by Kent Police."
