Deal Hospital has been praised by a man who was treated there when he visited the town as part of a 6,000-mile trek around the Great Britain coastline.

Adam Short, 40, who started his trek in Southampton on March 6, is aiming to raise £100,000 for Save The Children and the Scouts. He arrived Deal yesterday (Thursday).

Adam, who comes from Dorset, spent last night camped on Deal beach. Before that he found himself in The Zetland Arms pub, suffering from pain in his left shoulder. Bar staff arranged for a taxi to take him to Deal Hospital, where he was treated for a pulled muscle and given painkillers. He described the nurses there as “fantastic”.

Using no maps and no support team, Adam relies entirely on his previous Scout training and smart phone, using the app Google Maps to direct him. Along his journey Adam has woken up to ice in his tent. The miles have damaged his boots, but he hasn’t yet had to get them replaced.

Apart from raising money for his chosen charities, Adam is hoping to set an example to steer children away from staying indoors playing game consoles, and enjoy the outside.

He said he was in good spirts and enjoyed meeting people in Deal. He said: “People are lovely and the weather is beautiful. What more could you ask for?”
