A day-long festival of music will keep the memory of a Deal drumming student alive, while raising funds to nurture the skills of an up-and-coming musician.

Stevefest was put together to remember the life of Steve Newman who died in a road accident in April 2005.

The inaugural event happened on the first anniversary of his death at the former Linwood Youth Centre in Deal.

Steve Newman is the inspiration for the annual SteveFest which takes place this year at the Astor Theatre

In recent years it has been held at the Astor, where bands give their time for the cause.

At the time of his death, he was studying music at the DrumTech music school in London.

Proceeds from subsequent events have helped pay for scholarships for would-be drummers.

Mike Newman, Steve’s father, has liaised with Drum Tech, with his wife Bev, helping select students to receive the scholarship.

Stevefest will be at the Astor Community Theatre, Stanhope Road, Deal, on Sunday, May 1, from 1pm.

Tickets at £8 are available online at www.theastor.org or by calling 01304 370220.
