Dover have moved swiftly to appoint former Arsenal player Martin Hayes as their new boss after Ian Hendon quit the club to join Gillingham.

Hayes agreed to take on the Crabble hotseat in a meeting with chairman Jim Parmenter on Tuesday night, just hours after Hendon told Mr Parmenter he was joining the Gills as former Whites boss Andy Hessenthaler's assistant.

Mr Parmenter said: "We had a shortlist of two when we appointed Ian. Luckily the other applicant, who we regarded very highly, was still available. Martin came down on Tuesday night and agreed terms. He will start work on Thursday.

"He is a very good football man who has been successful at Arsenal, Celtic and Bishop's Stortford."

Mr Parmenter added: "It is best to move on and put this behind us. Martin Hayes will be a very good appointment for this club."

Mr Parmenter also revealed Hendon hadn't signed a contract with the Whites after going on holiday soon after his unveiling, and thus Dover were not entitled to any compensation for his departure.
