Dover District Council now has three Ukip members among the mix of 17 Labour members and 25 Conservatives.

In what was a long night at Dover Cruise Terminal 2, the announcing of the election results for 21 district council wards got under way at around 6am. It finished just before 9am.

Shock results include Ukip’s Georgette Rapley beating off long standing member Gordon Cowan (Lab) to represent the Town and Pier ward, by 31 votes.

Conservatives Paul Watkins and Keith Morris are your St Margaret's-at-Cliffe district councillors

Joining Cllr Rapley in the council is Ben Glayzer (Ukip) for Tower Hamlets and Andrew Richardson (Ukip) for Maxton, Elms Vale and Priory.

As expected, Paul Watkins (Cons) who has represented St Margaret’s-at-Cliffe for 16 years and Keith Morris (Cons) who has completed four years with the council, were voted in.

Cllr Morris said: “We worked for it. We do what we can for the village.”

Cllr Watkins added: “It’s a lovely area to represent and the people are nice.”

Paul Le Chevalier (Cons) gained one of three seats in Walmer

Those who missed out include Mayor of Deal Deryck Murray who defected from Labour to the Liberal Democrats weeks before the election, Independent Chris Tough, Ben Bano (Lab) and Peter Jull (Cons) who fought hard to represent North Deal.

Adrian Friend (Cons), who took the district seat for North Deal the first time, said it was an honour.

He said: "I would like to thank all those that voted for us. I do take the work seriously and I will work for what the majority of residents wish for in Deal. I won't be tied to a party whip, I will do what is best for the community of Deal."

He added that he thought Deal was a wonderful town with a great community spirit. He also said he will work with the two other North Deal district councillors, Bob Frost (Cons) and Bill Gardner (Lab).

He said: "Once you are a district councillor you all work together."
