Dover fire crews were called to the Port of Dover's Eastern Docks this morning after a HGV began leaking diesel.

Firefighters got to the scene at 5.30am and took two hours to clear 100 litres of fuel.

They arrived with a cargo of wipes containing steralising alcohol.

The spillage happened after the lorry was involved in a collision as it emerged off the berthing ramp from a ferry.

A spokesman for the crew said: "The port staff contained the spillage."

The Environment Agency told the Mercury that they were called but said there has been no cause of pollution, so they are no longer involved.

A spokeswoman for the port of Dover said: "The lorry is in the process of being removed.

"There is no disruption to ferries or the travelling public."
