Franny McGuirk, playing on his home course at Prince’s, won the Kent PGA title on Friday after a sudden death play-off.

The in-form McGuirk, who qualified for the Open Championship at Royal St George’s last month and currently leads the TP Tour Order of Merit, recorded a nine-over-par total of 207 in the regulation 54 holes to finish tied first with Jamie Harris of the Nevill.

Playing with Harris for the final two rounds, McGuirk made the most of a last minute sponsor’s invitation and his local knowledge. Having birdied the 7th to stay level with Harris, McGuirk dropped a shot at the par-5 12th but charged home with birdies on the 14th and the 16th to force a play-off down the 10th

With around 100 people watching the action, both players found the fairway but Harris’s three-wood second shot missed the green to the right while McGuirk just missed on the left.

Harris’s chip left an eight-foot putt which skirted the hole and after chipping to six foot, McGuirk putted out to win the title.

McGuirk, who won the Kent Open title in 2007, said: "It was fantastic to play together and match each other shot for shot.

"With so many watching the play-off, the atmosphere was electric. Jamie played brilliantly but his last putt was just a fraction out and left me with the opportunity I’d been dreaming of all week!"
